Weekly Intelligence, W21
Enterprise HCM agentic AI moved from announce to ship in 96 hours. Workday Q1 FY27 (May 21) is now the reference print: $500M agentic ARR, Agent System of Record GA, 4,000+ agent customers, 14M Recruiting Agent hiring processes. Vendors without an answer to the four-corner question (agentic ARR magnitude, agent customer count, per-agent throughput, customer-perimeter governance plane) carry a visible gap into H2 2026 procurement.

Workday reported Q1 FY27 (quarter ended April 30 2026) after market close on May 21. Total revenue $2.542B (+13.5% YoY); subscription revenue $2.354B (+14.3%); non-GAAP operating margin 31.8%. 12-month subscription revenue backlog (cRPO) $8.806B (+15.5%); total subscription RPO $27.294B (+10.9%). FY27 subscription-revenue guide held at $9.925–9.950B; FY27 non-GAAP operating margin guide raised to 30.5% from 30%. Management called Q1 “the best Q1 new ACV growth in five years.” The disclosures that change the enterprise HCM map: agentic AI annualised revenue approaching $500M (first public enterprise-HCM agentic-ARR disclosure); 4,000+ customers with at least one Workday-built agent in production, more than doubled QoQ; Workday Recruiting Agent supported 14M hiring processes in Q1, +44% YoY; Workday Agent System of Record is now GA: a single visibility-and-control surface across every AI agent a Workday customer runs (Workday-built, Illuminate partner-built, or customer-built agents from Claude / OpenAI / Microsoft). Parallel newsroom drop the same morning at the Sana AI Summit NYC: Sana for IT Service Management (Workday’s first horizontal-IT agentic surface: on/offboarding access, password reset, system access, sign-in resolution, routed through existing HR / identity / IT systems) and Sana Travel Agent (first Workday T&E agentic surface, books travel + auto-manages expenses against policy). Both early-adopter availability H2 2026, FY27 GA. Sana from Workday positioned as “superintelligence for work”, available worldwide as Sana Enterprise, a standalone AI workspace SKU outside Workday-native UI. CEO context: first full quarter and first earnings call under returning co-founder Aneel Bhusri (effective Feb 9 2026, replacing Carl Eschenbach who continues as strategic advisor). Bhusri framed Workday’s strategy as putting AI “at the centre, not one part of the broader product story.”
CFO + CHRO buyer. The $500M agentic-ARR figure is the new renewal comparator. CFOs running cost-line evaluation will ask peer HCM vendors (ADP, SAP SuccessFactors, Oracle Fusion, Dayforce) the equivalent question: what is your disclosed agentic ARR? Vendors who answer “AI is embedded” without quantifying it now carry a visible disclosure gap. Workday raised the floor. Multi-regional regulatory operator. Agent System of Record GA is the platform-vs-product reference point. It is not a marketplace: it is a customer-perimeter agent registry with visibility and control across Workday-built / partner-built / customer-built agents inside the Workday environment. That is the exact governance plane any regulated-industry payroll deployment must evaluate against. Vendors whose “agent platform” covers only first-party agents have a thinner story than Workday today. Construction vertical. Not directly addressed in the Q1 print. But Sana ITSM + Travel Agent expand Workday’s mid-market customer-expansion surface into IT and T&E budget lines where construction HCM incumbents historically have weak product. The long-cycle mid-market competitive pressure compounds. Platform vs product. Sana Enterprise as a worldwide standalone AI workspace SKU is the strongest enterprise-HCM platform-mode disclosure of 2026. Workday is publicly stating that AI-workspace value can be sold without the underlying HCM / ERP.
Workday’s Q1 print establishes the four data points the rest of the enterprise HCM cohort will be benchmarked against in H2 2026 procurement conversations. Each corner is a CFO/CHRO question with a numeric or named answer.
| Vendor | Agentic ARR magnitude | Agent customer count | Per-agent throughput | Customer-perimeter governance plane |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Workday | ~$500M (May 21) | 4,000+ (May 21) | Recruiting Agent: 14M hiring processes (May 21) | Agent System of Record GA (May 21) |
| SAP SuccessFactors | Not disclosed | Not disclosed | Payroll Explanation Agent up to 50% deflection (May 11) | Joule Studio + Joule Agent Framework, June 2026 GA target |
| ADP | Not disclosed | Not disclosed | Not disclosed | Lyric Agent Suite (announced; governance plane undisclosed) |
| Intuit Enterprise Suite | Not disclosed | Not disclosed | Project Management Agent: not disclosed | Not disclosed |
| Oracle Fusion HCM | Not disclosed | Not disclosed | Not disclosed | Not disclosed |
| Dayforce | Not disclosed | Not disclosed | Not disclosed | Not disclosed |
| UKG | Not disclosed | Not disclosed | UKG Pro Pay with Workforce AI: $15M annual leakage detection (UKG-KPMG research, May 11) | Not disclosed |
Two reads to carry into H2 2026. First: only Workday and SAP have any answer on the per-agent-throughput axis; the other enterprise HCM vendors carry an unanswered RFP question. Second: governance plane is the next column to populate. Expect SAP Joule Studio formal GA framing at SHRM26 (June), and watch whether ADP, Dayforce or Oracle ship comparable customer-perimeter agent registry positioning before HR Tech Las Vegas (October).
“Agentic AI is at the centre of our strategy, not one part of the broader product story.”
Aneel Bhusri, Workday co-founder & returning CEO, Q1 FY27 earnings call (May 21 2026). First full-quarter analyst-call framing of his second tenure.02
KPMG and Anthropic announced a global strategic alliance on May 19. Claude rolled to 276,000 KPMG employees via the KPMG Digital Gateway Powered by Claude; phased deployment with Tax & Legal first; Microsoft Azure deployment; full rollout by September 2026. KPMG named as an Anthropic preferred partner for private equity. Combined with the W20 PwC expansion and Deloitte’s prior 470,000-employee Claude commitment, three of four Big-4 firms are now publicly committed to Claude as a core delivery platform. EY is the lone holdout.
CFO buyer. The advisor channel (Tax & Legal, audit, finance transformation, ERP implementation) is the procurement gatekeeper for mid-market and enterprise finance-platform deals (NetSuite, SAP, Oracle Fusion, mid-market ERP). With three Big-4 firms now agentified inside Claude, advisor-side workflows are converging on Anthropic-native tooling. Multi-regional regulatory operator. KPMG Tax & Legal lands first in the rollout. Tax compliance is the regulatory surface most ERPs sit beneath. The advisor channel that previously delivered mid-market ERP + NetSuite implementations is now running on Claude. Vendors who do not have a published Anthropic / Claude posture face a procurement gating question that did not exist six months ago. Construction vertical. Indirect. KPMG and PwC do execute construction-vertical ERP work, but the named workstreams at launch are horizontal Tax & Legal + finance. Construction-specific Claude vertical packs are still open. Platform vs product. The advisor channel as Anthropic-native distribution platform is now a category. Marketplace partner thinking across HR&P has to reset: the Big-4 firms historically partnered with mid-market ERP vendors now arrive at the customer with Claude already deployed across their delivery teams. Vendor-published partner directories are no longer the only surface where advisors meet customers.
| Big-4 | Headcount | Claude commitment | Named workstreams | HR&P advisor channel exposure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Deloitte | ~470K | Anthropic Enterprise (prior coverage) | Cross-functional Claude deployment | Direct: Workday + SAP SuccessFactors implementation partner |
| PwC | ~328K (30K Claude-certified) | Expanded partnership (May 14): new Claude-native finance business group + COE | Build technology, execute deals, reinvent enterprise functions | Direct: mid-market ERP go-live partner + Workday implementation |
| KPMG | 276K | Global strategic alliance + Digital Gateway Powered by Claude (May 19) | Tax & Legal first, full rollout September 2026; Anthropic preferred partner for private equity | Direct: mid-market ERP Tax + advisory channel; PE buyer that owns large share of mid-market accounting customer base |
| EY | ~395K | Not publicly committed to Claude as core platform | (EY.ai initiative is Microsoft + OpenAI-led to date) | Indirect: UK audit + tax channel; not Anthropic-native |
For mid-market and enterprise HR&P deals where Big-4 advisor channel is the procurement gatekeeper, three of four firms now arrive with Claude already operational across their delivery teams. The question facing every HR&P vendor: how does your product surface to a Claude-native advisor? Vendors with a public Anthropic posture (Xero Anthropic agreement + Claude.ai secure connector, Gusto Anthropic Connectors-listed payroll execution) have an answer. Vendors without a public posture do not.

Four funding rounds landed inside one 7-day window, all in the frontline / global-payroll lane. (1) Findd $21M growth investment from Unbundled Capital (May 20): AI-native frontline workforce management, biometric identity upstream of payroll + ERP, DiDi AI agent enforcing union rules at point of work; Provo UT; named verticals: facility services + specialty contractors. (2) RemotePass $17.4M Series B led by EBRD Venture Capital (May 20): UAE-founded global payroll + spend management + embedded fintech; 35,000+ workers / 150+ countries / $800M+ cross-border payroll facilitated; profitable; expanding into Europe and the US. (3) Blink $17M from Enlightened Hospitality Investments (Danny Meyer USHG affiliate) + global partnership with Shake Shack (May 18): hospitality / retail / facilities frontline EX; 700K hospitality users added in 2025; up to 26% turnover reduction reported. (4) Elephant Company €5M+ from EnBW New Ventures + Wepa (May 15): Berlin AI-powered training for frontline / deskless / blue-collar workers.
Construction vertical. Findd is the most direct architectural overlap with any construction-payroll incumbent of any new entrant in 2026: biometric identity + union-rule + point-of-work enforcement is the four-layer construction-payroll capability NA construction HCM ships against. Findd’s named verticals (facility services + specialty contractors) are the customer base construction-payroll incumbents target. The competitive surface for Construction NA narrowed visibly this week. CFO buyer. RemotePass’s profitable + $800M cross-border payroll + EBRD-led Series B is the strongest challenger global-payroll funding signal of 2026. Deel + Remote face a third credible challenger with embedded-fintech positioning (SpendCards = payroll + contractor payments + corporate expense in one). Multi-regional regulatory operator. All four entrants are explicitly multi-regional or geo-expanding into Europe + US (RemotePass), or already vertical-deep (Findd in facility services / specialty contractors, Blink in hospitality). The frontline lane that historically Sona / Humand / Quinyx / Workforce.com owned is now five-vendor-deep with funding inside one week. Platform vs product. Blink + Findd are explicitly product layer (frontline EX, biometric ID). RemotePass is becoming a platform (payroll + spend + embedded fintech inside one workflow surface). The frontline-lane consolidation thesis (one platform-shape vendor wins, four product-shape vendors get absorbed) gains a credible platform candidate.
Three of this week’s four entrants show multiple momentum signals (funding, customer scale, M&A, GA, geo expansion, or 3+ signals in 90 days). The fourth rests on a single signal for now.
| Vendor | Signals | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Findd | Funding ($21M) + customer-scale verticals + direct Construction NA overlap | One to watch: Construction NA |
| RemotePass | Funding ($17.4M Series B) + customer scale (35K workers, 150+ countries) + profitable + compound product (payroll + spend + embedded fintech) | One to watch |
| Blink | Funding ($17M) + customer scale (700K users added 2025) + Shake Shack global partnership | One to watch: frontline EX |
| Elephant Company | Funding (€5M+): single signal in window, no scale / M&A / GA | Watching: single signal so far |

SAP SuccessFactors Autonomous HCM post-event coverage (May 18–20) sharpens the agent catalogue to 14 Joule Assistants + 42 specialised agents reaching GA June 2026. Assistant list: Core HR, Payroll, Time, HR Service, Compensation, Recruiting, Onboarding, Learning, Performance, Career, Skills, HR System, HR Knowledge + SmartRecruiters connector (per Lara Albert iTWire interview). First enterprise HCM vendor with a granular named-assistant catalogue. SHRM26 (June 16–19, Orlando) is the first customer-facing demo opportunity for the Joule HR Assistants family. Combined with W20’s coverage of Claude embedded as primary reasoning across the SAP Business AI Platform + the €100M partner fund + $5.2B n8n strategic investment, SAP’s Autonomous HCM is the most complete enterprise-HCM platform-mode shape of 2026.
Platform vs product. Named-assistant catalogue + GA date + Claude as primary reasoning + partner fund + workflow runtime (n8n inside Joule Studio) is the four-corner shape every other enterprise HCM vendor is now compared against. CFO buyer. Sapphire CFO briefing demo (Treasury Manager asks Joule for a populated CFO briefing presentation) is still the cleanest enterprise-HCM finance-buyer-facing AI demo of the cycle. Multi-regional regulatory operator. SuccessFactors’ multi-region payroll regulatory footprint remains the differentiator vs the named-assistant catalogue; the catalogue must be jurisdiction-aware by GA to clear the regulatory question. Construction vertical. SAP’s named industry focus (public sector, healthcare, education, life sciences, utilities) does not include construction.
Code with Claude London Extended (May 19–20) shipped three net-new Claude Managed Agents primitives on top of Self-Hosted Sandboxes + MCP Tunnels (both May 18 launch). Multi-agent Orchestration (public beta): lead agent delegates to specialist subagents on shared filesystem, each with own model + prompt + tools. Outcomes (public beta): developer-defined success rubric + separate grader iterates until pass; first Anthropic-shipped runtime-grading primitive. Dreaming (research preview): scheduled process reviews session memory, extracts patterns, curates memories for self-improvement between sessions. Two operational improvements alongside: live-session tool / MCP / vault hot-swap; >100k-token MCP outputs auto-offload to Sandbox files. The Managed Agents stack is now feature-complete for regulated-industry payroll deployment: Sandboxes (perimeter) + MCP Tunnels (private-data access) + Multi-agent Orchestration (workflow control) + Outcomes (completion criteria) + Dreaming (improvement loop). Remaining objections to model-vendor-hosted agents on HR&P data are commercial / procurement, not architectural.
Multi-regional regulatory operator. Self-Hosted Sandboxes plus MCP Tunnels are the first model-vendor deployment shape that survives UK / NA / EU regulatory review for AI on payroll / PII data. Outcomes as a runtime grading primitive shifts vendor differentiation: vendors who ship runtime grading inside their own agents (Workday ASR is the closest equivalent today) have a story; vendors who don’t are exposed. Platform vs product. Outcomes collapses the “autonomous HCM” competitive differentiator into the platform layer. Vendors who positioned autonomy as a product feature (SAP Autonomous HCM, Workday Sana, ADP Lyric) now sit on top of a model-vendor primitive that does the autonomy at the platform level. CFO buyer. Procurement conversations on regulated AI deployment shift from “can your model survive review?” to “does your vendor route to a customer-perimeter Sandbox with MCP Tunnels?” Construction vertical. Indirect: the perimeter-deployment story matters for any vertical with worker-PII / union / certification data in the agent context.
Zellis acquired elementsuite on May 14. Combines Zellis UK payroll + HR with elementsuite’s AI-enabled HR + WFM (named customers include McDonald’s UK, Travelodge, Roadchef, Five Guys, Wesleyan). Creates an end-to-end UK AI-powered HR + payroll platform. Lands one week after Apax Partners’ buyout of Zellis from Bain Capital (May 8). Most material UK competitive shift of W20/W21.
Multi-regional regulatory operator. Zellis-elementsuite gives the UK market its first end-to-end AI-native HR + payroll incumbent operating at scale. Vendors selling UK + payroll + HR as separate products against integrated UK competitors face the integration question directly. CFO buyer. Apax-backed roll-up + AI-platform pitch + named hospitality logos is a credible UK alternative on the UK SMB-to-mid lane, alongside IRIS. Construction vertical. Not addressed; named customers are hospitality-skewed.

Second enterprise HCM vendor to follow Workday’s $500M agentic-ARR anchor. If SAP discloses Joule attached-ARR magnitude, the four-corner agentic comparator becomes industry standard. If they don’t, Workday’s gap widens.
14 named Joule Assistants + 42 specialised agents reaching GA. SHRM26 (June 16–19) is the first customer-facing demo opportunity. Watch for per-assistant quantified outcomes.
Workday Sana Enterprise is available worldwide as standalone AI workspace. Pricing terms undisclosed at Q1 print. Workday Rising US (October) is the likely disclosure venue.
Three of four Big-4 firms now publicly committed to Claude. EY is the lone holdout (EY.ai is Microsoft + OpenAI-led). EY-Claude alignment would close the Big-4 cluster.
Three frontline / global-payroll funding candidates to watch. Findd directly competes with NA construction-payroll incumbents on biometric + union + point-of-work enforcement.
Legal (May 12) + Small Business (May 13). Cadence is now weekly, not quarterly. A “Claude for HR” or “Claude for Payroll” pack inside 30–60 days is the working assumption.
Major US HR practice announcement venue. First customer-facing Joule HR Assistants demo opportunity. Expect Workday + ADP + BambooHR + Paycom + Paychex + UKG presentations.
Mandalay Bay. Premier US HR-tech product-launch venue. Autumn cycle stress-tests every enterprise HCM vendor’s four-corner agentic-AI position. Workday Rising US (Oct 12–15) sits one week earlier.
