Competitor Profile
Where this is heading
Asure is running two strategies at once and only one of them carries disclosed numbers. The payroll tax and treasury business is being sold as infrastructure underneath other payroll platforms, and it comes with a revenue share, a channel size and a start month. The agentic AI story is sold on top of Asure's own suite, and it comes with a function count.
The gap between how Asure markets Luna in a press release and how it describes Luna on its own product page is the most useful thing in this profile. The release says co-worker and execution. The product page says assistant, 'you review & approve', and, on tax, 'monitors filings'. Both are Asure's words, published four days apart.

How the product hangs together, at the level a product leader needs to place it.
Asure Software sells payroll, tax filing, HR and time to US small businesses, both directly and through a reseller channel. It is listed on Nasdaq, which makes its economics visible in a way most vendors in this segment are not.
AsureWorks launched on 27 April 2026 as a done-for-you payroll and HR service running on the AsureCentral platform. Asure specialists handle payroll processing, tax filing, employee records, onboarding, time and pay data coordination, benefits administration coordination and routine HR compliance documentation, while the client remains the employer of record. Asure describes it explicitly as an administrative services outsourcing offering and explicitly not a professional employer organisation, and that distinction is the product: it offers the delivery without the co-employment relationship a PEO requires.
The stated commercial logic is unusually direct. Asure puts a managed-service client at two to three times the revenue of a payroll-only client. Where most vendors in this pattern describe efficiency, Asure describes revenue per client. The platform underneath all of it is bought rather than built. Asure HCM runs on the Evolution engine that arrived with iSystems in 2017, and the regional payroll books Asure has acquired since are customer bases layered onto that same foundation.
Two developments in August 2026 changed the shape of the company more than AsureWorks did. On 21 August Asure announced it would co-sell Enterprise Payroll Tax and Treasury through AWS Marketplace from September, disclosing that the business is "nearly 20% of Asure's revenues" and that the channel carries 330,000 enterprise customers. The named buyers include payroll and HR platforms, which makes this a bid to sell infrastructure to competitors. On 26 August it announced 50 agentic Luna functions across the United States and Canada. Asure reported Q2 2026 revenue of $37.1m, up 23% year over year, with recurring revenue of $34.0m, up 19%.
03
Geographic footprint, and where payroll is native rather than partner-delivered.
North America: NATIVE. US payroll and tax filing run on Asure's own engine. Canada is claimed for Luna coverage and for payroll support at "hundreds of thousands" of employees.
United Kingdom, EU and South Africa: NOT SERVED. Asure does not run statutory payroll outside North America, so PAYE, RTI and CIS do not arise as capability questions.
There are now two competitive surfaces rather than one. The first is the managed-service surface, where AsureWorks sits alongside Insperity HRScale, BambooHR Services, Paylocity Elevate Solutions and Intuit's bundled HR advisory, none of which publishes a price.
The second matters more and is easy to miss, because it puts Asure underneath its competitors rather than beside them. Enterprise Payroll Tax and Treasury is marketed as "Enterprise payroll tax infrastructure" serving "2M+ employees nationwide", and from September 2026 it is co-sold through AWS Marketplace to a named buyer list that includes "large employers, payroll service providers, and payroll and HR platforms". That is the arms-supplier position Symmetry occupies with a tax engine inside Gusto, UKG and Paychex. A vendor putting roughly a fifth of its revenue behind being the layer beneath other payroll platforms is competing in a different market from the one its brand sits in.
04
The positioning is done-for-you delivery at small-business scale, aimed at employers who want payroll handled rather than software to handle it with, and structured to avoid the co-employment commitment a PEO asks for. AsureWorks states it plainly: "No Co-Employment. You remain employer of record", and the page says the model is "designed for buyers comparing internal administration, managed service support, and PEO structures".
On price, the precise position is worth stating because it is easy to get wrong in both directions. Asure does publish packaging: a three-tier comparison across Payroll, Payroll & HR, and Payroll, HR & Time, in which "Every plan includes full-service payroll" and each feature is marked included, add-on or absent. What it does not publish is a number. Every tier and the managed service alike resolve to "Talk to an Expert" or "Get Pricing". So a buyer can compare what is in each tier and cannot compare what any of it costs, which is the pattern across the whole group of North American managed-service launches.
One packaging detail is worth carrying: the HR hotline in the upper tiers is supplied by Mineral, a third party, so part of what a buyer reads as Asure's HR advisory depth is bought in.
Asure does publish company-level guidance and quarterly results, which gives an outside reader more purchase here than at privately held peers. Q2 2026 revenue was $37.1m, up 23% year over year, with recurring revenue of $34.0m, up 19%.
05
Asure's agent is Luna, embedded across AsureCentral rather than offered as a route an outside agent can take into the product. No first-party MCP server or external agent endpoint has been established in any published source, and that is recorded as not checked rather than confirmed absent.
Asure describes Luna two ways, and the difference is the finding. In its 26 August 2026 release it is "From co-pilot to co-worker: Agentic AI doing real payroll, tax, compliance and workforce execution", with 50 functions across the United States and Canada and CEO Pat Goepel stating "Luna AI is not a payroll chatbot." On Asure's own Luna product page it is "an embedded AI assistant" that "can take action on your behalf, automating routine work while keeping the right controls in place so you can review and approve what matters most, from payroll to tax filings to HR decisions." The page carries the label "You review & approve" against the activities it lists.
The per-surface descriptions on that page are narrower than the release's five named surfaces. Payroll reads "Flags exceptions & auto-runs calculations". Tax reads "Monitors filings & prevents deposit errors" , monitoring a filing is not making one. The release's own worked examples point the same way: PTO balances, booking time off, retrieving a payslip, listing who has not signed a handbook, surfacing five-day stalls and sending reminders. In the single illustration touching a pay run, "the unresolved exception has been routed for human review before payroll closes", and Asure sets out its loop as observe, reason, decide, act, verify and escalate when necessary.
What can be said with confidence: Luna acts inside the system of record, with real payroll and HR data, which is a stronger position than an assistant bolted alongside it , Asure's own framing is that most AI tools "don't have the context or authority to act". What has not been demonstrated publicly is unattended completion of a calculation, a filing or a payment. No price, adoption figure, availability date or accuracy rate accompanies the 50-function claim, and the register itself is published on a Substack blog rather than in product documentation.
06
Diagnosis and the play together. Each is a live attack vector, not a general weakness.
The agentic claim is the widest opening, because Asure has published the material that qualifies it. A competitor able to state which of calculate, file and pay its agent completes unattended, and what happens to the exception, can answer a question Asure's own product page answers with "you review & approve". The same applies to evidence: no adoption figure, accuracy rate, availability date or price accompanies the 50-function claim, so a rival publishing any one of those competes on measurement against a competitor offering a count.
The managed tier publishes packaging but no price. A buyer can see what each of the three tiers contains and cannot see what any tier costs, and there is no published margin or basis on which to judge the managed service against running payroll in-house. Any competitor willing to publish a comparable figure takes that argument, because the buyer currently takes the value on trust across the whole group of launches.
Geography is absolute. Asure serves North America only, so any employer with staff elsewhere needs a second vendor, and any competitor running multi-country statutory payroll wins that comparison without arguing it.
The AWS Marketplace channel is unproven from outside. Co-selling began in September 2026 and Asure discloses no marketplace-sourced revenue, so whether the infrastructure bet converts is currently unobservable. The ~20% figure describes the business being listed, not business the channel has won.
The agent surface remains inbound-only as far as any public source establishes. A competitor whose payroll is reachable by the buyer's own assistant offers something Asure has not been shown to offer.

What Asure Software has bought, where each sits now, and what it says about direction. None of these are signals; they are standing facts about who owns what.
Earlier, and still load-bearing. Outside the five-year window, but these are why the product is shaped the way it is: iSystems and Compass HRM (May 2017, Payroll, tax, HR and time platform)
Checked 2026-08-15. Operating cadence and status are re-checked on each profile refresh; a change of state is itself a finding, because nobody announces the day an acquisition finishes being absorbed.
