Competitor Profile

isolved

Where this is heading

isolved is the sharpest available test of whether payroll correctness becomes something a vendor will put a number against. It shipped the first agent in this corpus aimed at payroll accuracy rather than access, and shipped it with no accuracy figure attached.

isolved is the first vendor here to put agents on the org chart rather than in the product. Its own positioning is Workforce Capital Management, 'one connected platform built for every worker, human or agentic'. Whatever that turns out to mean commercially, it is a different claim from an assistant inside payroll: it treats an agent as a thing the platform administers, alongside the 9 million people it says it already pays. A competitor selling an agent as a feature is answering a smaller question.

What they offer

How the product hangs together, at the level a product leader needs to place it.

isolved sells a unified employer-services platform to small and mid-sized US employers, spanning payroll, HR, benefits and time, sold both directly and through a large partner channel. The platform position it argues for is breadth on one record rather than depth in one function.

The agent layer is where the interesting work sits. In June 2026 isolved announced six autonomous agents arriving in phases across 2026 and 2027, and brought the platform to Anthropic's connectors directory at the same time. The named agents are The Guardian for payroll, The Advisor for benefits enrolment guidance, The Orchestrator for onboarding task execution and The Helper for employee HR questions. The Guardian shipped on 4 August 2026 and is described as analysing every payroll run, flagging potential errors before close and taking action to correct them with human permission.

What The Guardian shipped without is the number. There is no published detection rate, no error rate and no stated evaluation method. The launch material carries buyer-pain statistics instead, that 63% of employees have experienced payroll issues and 49% would begin a job search after two payroll errors. Those describe the size of the problem, not the performance of the agent against it. The scale is assembled rather than grown. isolved bought AmCheck's multi-state delivery network in 2018 and a US payroll outsourcing business carrying more than 44,000 customers in 2019, which together took it past 145,000 employers and turned a platform vendor into a payroll-services incumbent.

Where they compete

Geographic footprint, and where payroll is native rather than partner-delivered.

North America: NATIVE. US payroll, tax filing and employer services are isolved's own engine and its whole market. The platform is sold direct and through a partner network of service bureaux, which is a materially different distribution shape from a direct-only competitor and gives it reach into employers a direct sales motion would not reach.

United Kingdom: NOT SERVED. isolved does not run UK statutory payroll, so PAYE, RTI and CIS do not arise as capability questions.

EU: UNKNOWN. no published source establishes European payroll coverage in either direction, and it should not be read as absent on that basis.

South Africa: NOT SERVED.

Positioning and pricing

isolved positions on the unified record and on outcomes rather than on tooling, and its agent framing is explicit about that distinction: the argument made for The Guardian is that it delivers a payroll outcome rather than accelerating an individual task. No price is published for the agent layer in any source found, and no source found separates agent capability into its own line item, so on the evidence available the agents are bundled into the platform rather than sold.

That bundling is itself a data point for the pricing question standing over this market. A vendor shipping six named agents without attaching a price to any of them is answering the AI pricing question by declining it.

AI capabilities

A first-party MCP surface, generally available. The isolved Connector for Claude sits in Anthropic's connectors directory and is authorised once by the employee from Claude's connector settings, after which questions and approved actions run in natural language inside a Claude conversation. Write scope is real but gated: isolved describes permissions-based checkpoints, visibility into every action an agent takes, a human in the loop, and escalation when an agent's confidence score is low.

That gating is consistent with where isolved sits on liability. The employer signs the filing, so the control surface is built to keep a person on the hook for the action rather than to maximise autonomy, which is the same pattern visible at ADP and PayFit and the opposite of the pattern at vendors that carry the loss themselves.

The Guardian is aimed at a failure mode most agent controls do not address. Approval gates operate on the actions an agent takes; a missed error is an action not taken, which produces a clean run and an empty exception queue. An agent built to catch what was missed is the right shape of answer. Whether it works is unanswerable from outside, because no rate has been published.

Where they're beatable

Diagnosis and the play together. Each is a live attack vector, not a general weakness.

The correctness claim is unquantified and the vendor has chosen to leave it that way. Any competitor that publishes what its own correctness tooling catches, at what rate, measured how and refreshed how often, takes ground here immediately, because isolved has raised the buyer's expectation about accuracy without supplying an instrument to check it. A buyer can ask the question directly at renewal and the answer is currently a gap for everyone, which makes it a cheap question to ask and an expensive one to be first to answer.

Geography is the harder constraint. isolved is a US platform and does not run UK statutory payroll, so any buyer with employees in more than one jurisdiction has a structural reason to look elsewhere, and no amount of agent capability closes that.

The agent programme is also mostly ahead of itself. Six agents were announced and one has shipped, with the rest arriving in phases across 2026 and 2027. A vendor with fewer announced agents and more shipped ones can contest the roadmap directly, and the honest counter to an announcement is a delivery date.

Acquisitions

June 2023
Payroll and HR reseller, former isolved Network partner · Undisclosed
AbsorbedAbsorbed
payarchcm.com now 301-redirects to an isolved onboarding page; no independent Payarc signup, pricing or product page remains. Domain migration and absence of independent marketing indicate full absorption; no adverse disclosure found.
isolved buys its own resellers outright rather than merely supporting them, converting channel relationships into directly owned customers and consolidating a fragmented network.
July 2021
Predictive people analytics, conversational HR assistant · Undisclosed
AbsorbedAbsorbed
No independent TrenData product or site remains active; the analytics and assistant capability is marketed only as a native People Cloud feature. By 2026 TrenData appears only inside isolved's own product marketing, with no separate vendor presence.
Buying predictive analytics and a conversational assistant rather than building them is a vendor compressing build time to keep an AI story competitive with larger HCM platforms.
April 2021
Workplace giving and volunteering · Undisclosed
AbsorbedAbsorbed
No standalone Givful product or signup page remains; giving and volunteering is marketed as a native isolved People Cloud capability. By 2026 Givful exists only as a feature inside People Cloud, with no independent go-to-market presence.
A low-cost tuck-in that let isolved claim a CSR feature as standard mid-market HCM rather than a bolt-on. It competes on breadth of employee-experience features, not core payroll.

Earlier, and still load-bearing. Outside the five-year window, but these are why the product is shaped the way it is: Sage Payroll Solutions (US) (January 2019, US payroll outsourcing business) · AmCheck (September 2018, Regional payroll services, eight US offices)

Checked 2026-08-15. Operating cadence and status are re-checked on each profile refresh; a change of state is itself a finding, because nobody announces the day an acquisition finishes being absorbed.
