Competitor Profile

Warp

Where this is heading

Warp is a US payroll, HR, benefits and IT platform for venture-backed startups, sold on the promise that agents do the operational half of HR. It has raised $85M, claims 1,000+ companies, publishes its prices, and on September 25, 2026 launched Warp Agent, an always-on agent that registers new states, sets up payroll, enrols benefits and resolves tax notices under per-workflow autonomy settings.

The read that reframes it: Warp is a compliance and workflow company sitting on someone else's payroll engine. Check's own case study credits Check with Warp's tax calculations, filings and payment processing, and Warp's API still defers to the provider on net pay. What Warp built is the layer the incumbents make customers do by hand, state registration, notice resolution and onboarding, and it is right that this is where the labour is. But the agent that owns the outcome does not own the calculation, and Warp's own terms cap its liability at six months of fees. The autonomy is real; the accountability behind it is contractual and small.

The stated limit is geography and scale. Warp runs employee payroll in one country, reaches everyone else only as contractors, and its references are overwhelmingly AI startups. It is a serious threat to how young US companies choose payroll, and not yet evidence about anyone else.

What they offer

How the product hangs together, at the level a product leader needs to place it.

Warp is a New York-based employee management platform, legal entity Poaster Technologies, Inc., founded in 2023 by Ayush Sharma, its CEO, and a Y Combinator Winter 2023 company. The product bundles US payroll for W-2 employees in all 50 states and 1099 contractors, payroll tax compliance, an HRIS covering onboarding, offboarding, PTO, expenses and document acknowledgements, benefits brokered in-house (medical, dental, vision, 401(k), with COBRA and ACA workflows in the Benefits Brokerage add-on), IT management sold as an add-on (Google Workspace and Okta provisioning plus device management), time tracking, and payments to contractors outside the US, which Warp puts at 150+ countries on its product pages and 200+ on its pricing page. Warp states plainly that the contractor product is a payment platform, not an employer of record.

The centre of gravity is tax compliance rather than the pay run. Warp says its agents monitor 10,000+ jurisdictions, open state tax accounts the moment an employee work location is added, file payroll forms and resolve tax notices. Its own figures for the outcome disagree with each other: the homepage and the Stripe partnership post say $100M+ in penalties saved, the September 2026 launch post says $200M+. The same post claims 7X year-over-year growth and that Warp is on track to process $2 billion+ in payroll volume this year. None of these figures is independently verified.

The pay run itself is not Warp's engine. Check (checkhq.com), the embedded payroll infrastructure provider, publishes a partner page on Warp in which Sharma says partnering with Check lets Warp focus on the product experience "while letting Check handle tax calculations, filings, and payment processing". That page describes Warp at under 25 employees and building its payroll product in 14 days with two engineers, so it dates from the company's early period. Warp's own site does not name Check, but its current API documentation says net pay on every payroll object "remains provider-authoritative", which is consistent with gross-to-net being computed by an external provider rather than by Warp.

The September 25, 2026 release, branded Warp 2.0, adds Warp Agent: an always-on agent that runs Routines on a schedule or on an event. The defaults, enabled out of the box, fire when an offer is signed (register the company in a new state, set up payroll, enrol benefits and 401(k), order a laptop, create Google and Slack accounts), when a tax notice arrives (resolve it), and before every payroll (check for variances). Customers can write their own Routines in plain language. Integrations named on Warp's own pages include QuickBooks, Xero, NetSuite, Okta, Google Workspace, Slack, GitHub and Checkr for background checks, alongside a public REST API, a CLI and TypeScript and Go SDKs.

Where they compete

Geographic footprint, and where payroll is native rather than partner-delivered.

United States: served, on a partner engine. Warp runs W-2 payroll in all 50 states on the Pro plan (Starter is limited to three states) and handles state registration, filings and notice resolution as its own layer, but by Check's own account tax calculation, filing and payment processing run on Check's infrastructure. US payroll therefore runs through a partner engine rather than one Warp built itself.

United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, France, Spain and South Africa: not served for employee payroll. No UK PAYE or RTI, Canadian source deductions, or any continental or South African payroll product was found on warp.co, in its pricing, or in funding coverage. The only non-US footprint is contractor payments in local currency, where Warp lists the UK, the EU and Canada among supported markets, and it directs customers needing international employment to employer-of-record partners it does not name. The Employer Terms reference UK and EU GDPR only in a data-processing context. Absence of employee payroll outside the US is recorded as not found in any source reviewed, not as a stated policy.

Segment: Warp sells from seed-stage startups upward and markets explicitly to teams of up to 5,000 employees, with named customers skewed to venture-backed AI companies such as Bland AI, Greptile, Paraform, Julius AI, Serval and Corgi. Its distribution now starts upstream of any evaluation: since August 20, 2026 it is a preferred partner for Stripe Atlas and Stripe Startups, giving newly incorporated companies six months of the full platform free.

Positioning and pricing

Warp positions against the incumbents by name. Its comparison pages target ADP, Rippling, Paylocity and Gusto, and the Warp Agent launch post calls Workday, ADP and Rippling products "built for an era where every workflow assumed a person at the keyboard". The pitch to founders and heads of people is that the operational half of HR, the registrations, filings, notices, enrolments and provisioning, should not be done by a person at all.

Pricing is published, which is uncommon for a vendor reaching toward mid-market. Starter is $35 per person per month plus an $89 monthly platform fee, aimed at teams in up to three states, and includes next-day payroll, benefits, 401(k), onboarding, PTO, expenses, global contractors and base API, CLI and MCP access. Pro is $50 per person per month plus a $129 platform fee and adds all 50 states, AI tax-notice resolution, advanced reporting and ATS integrations. Enterprise is custom, billed annually with the platform fee waived, and adds same-day processing, multi-entity support, an advanced API module with webhooks and SLAs, and one-year audit log retention. Add-ons include Warp IT at $15 per person per month and time tracking at $5 per tracked person. Taken at list, Warp is a premium-priced product against small-business payroll, and the value case rests on the compliance labour it removes rather than on seat cost.

The notable pricing choice is that AI tax-notice resolution sits on Pro, not Starter, so the capability that defines the brand is gated to the plan that also unlocks multi-state operation. No separate price for Warp Agent was found; it appears bundled into the platform.

Distribution is where Warp is most distinctive, because it is being placed in front of buyers before a payroll evaluation happens. Since August 2026 it has been a preferred partner of Stripe Atlas, offering six months of free HR and payroll to companies incorporated there, so a founder can have payroll pre-selected at incorporation. In September 2026 Rillet, the AI-native general ledger, published a dedicated Warp integration page with its own demo call to action, posting each payroll run to the ledger as mapped journal entries, and Warp names Rillet among its customers. The pattern is an AI-native finance stack assembling around Warp as its payroll component. It should not be overstated: Rillet also describes itself as Rippling's preferred ERP, so the ledger is courting both, and neither placement is exclusive.

AI capabilities

Warp's AI posture is agentic by design, and the September 25, 2026 release makes it explicit. Warp Agent owns Routines that run without a prompt; each Routine carries its own autonomy setting (recommend, act after approval, or act alone) and a log of every run. The agent acts within the permissions of the person it acts for, money movement carries hard limits the agent cannot raise, and every action is recorded with an identity, a scope, a written rationale and a rollback. Warp says most customers start on approval and widen autonomy as they review the log. Where a task needs a human, such as a state tax portal that requires a phone call from someone holding power of attorney, the agent hands off to a Warp tax specialist. That hand-off matters: the autonomy claim is autonomy with a staffed service desk behind it, not zero humans.

The post also says Warp expects the majority of actions on the platform to be taken by agents, its own and customers', within a year, and claims its API, permissions model and audit layer were built for that from the start. The external surface supports part of that claim. A public REST API with scoped keys covers workers, offers, custom fields, benefits deductions, time off, I-9 verifications and read access to payrolls and paychecks, and Warp advertises MCP access for Claude and ChatGPT. What was not found is a documented agent-callable way to run or approve payroll, so external agents can read and manage people data but the pay run is not demonstrably exposed.

No AI model provider is named for Warp Agent in the launch release, the launch post, SiliconANGLE's coverage or Warp's product pages; this is recorded as not found. An individual listed as being at OpenAI appears among Warp's angel investors on its about page, which is an investor relationship, not evidence of the model stack.

Where they're beatable

Diagnosis and the play together. Each is a live attack vector, not a general weakness.

The engine is a partner's. By Check's own case study, tax calculations, filings and payment processing for Warp payroll run on Check's infrastructure, and Warp's own API documentation defers to the provider on net pay. Warp owns the compliance and workflow layer on top, and does it well by its customers' accounts, but a buyer comparing Warp against a vendor that owns calculation and filing end to end should ask the direct question: when a filing is late or a calculation is wrong, whose system produced it, and how many companies are between the error and the fix. Caveat: the Check case study describes the company's early period and Warp does not name Check on its own site, so the dependency is well evidenced but its current extent is not publicly confirmed.

Autonomy is sold; liability is not. Warp markets agents that file, resolve and act on their own, but its Employer Terms (last updated January 1, 2026) cap Warp's aggregate liability at the fees paid in the six months before the claim, exclude liability for errors arising from employer data, and disclaim that the service will be free from errors. No published tax-penalty guarantee was found. A competitor with a written penalty-coverage commitment has a sharper answer to a risk-averse finance buyer than any demo of an agent closing a notice.

One country. Warp runs employee payroll in the US only, across 50 states inside a single federal regime, and handles everyone else as contractors paid in local currency, with employer-of-record work pushed to unnamed partners. Any buyer with a first employee in the UK, Canada or Europe outgrows it on that hire, and the moment a startup customer opens a foreign entity is the moment Warp is weakest.

Scale. Warp claims 1,000+ companies against Gusto's 500,000+ small businesses, and its named references are almost all venture-backed AI startups. The segment is attractive and fast-growing, but it is narrow, and the 5,000-employee ceiling Warp advertises is a marketing statement, not a demonstrated reference base: no named customer of that size was found.

Hiring

Open roles are a leading indicator, and the composition matters more than the count. Read against the strategic call at the top of this profile.

Open roles

20

Week on week

-2 (-9.1%)

−2, −9.1%. Applied AI Engineer, Head of Finance and Head of Demand Generation open. *Method: Ashby posting API.*

What it says about strategy. The composition fits the thesis. Nine of 21 open roles are go-to-market, including a dedicated channel-partnerships lead, which is the hire you make when distribution through other platforms, Stripe Atlas and Rillet among them, is the plan. Only one tax-operations role is open against more than 1,000 claimed customers, which is what an agent that resolves notices should allow, and is worth watching as the customer count grows. Every role is in New York, so there is no hiring evidence yet of the UK entry that would change this vendor's relevance outside the US.
