Zellis put an agent that can adjust pay inside Microsoft Copilot, and Britain's April 2027 build list grew while SAP told customers to wait on part of it. The figures a buyer would judge any of this by, accuracy methods, worker counts and quarterly results, got scarcer in the same five days.

The deepest agent write surface on record in UK payroll went live this week, a rival answered with a date, and the one payroll vendor on record with accuracy figures published them without a method.
On 23 September Zellis made its Intelligent Assistant available through Microsoft Copilot, reachable from Teams and Outlook, with no migration. It uses the Model Context Protocol and inherits each user's ZellisONE permissions. It also acts: approvals for leave, contract amendments and pay adjustments, each switched on by the customer.
The governance is described in unusual detail and it is sound. Every request is authenticated against existing permissions, and every interaction is logged. What the release does not contain is any measure of correctness, for any capability. A wrong pay adjustment is a silent failure. It surfaces weeks later as a payslip query, not as an error.
MHR held its own conference the same afternoon in London. Its release came a day later and named an updated People First platform with an embedded assistant, available "globally from April 2027." A buyer comparing the two is choosing between something running now and something described now, with two tax-year ends in between.
Paychex is the only payroll vendor on record with published AI accuracy figures, from 31 August. Its headline says nearly 90% of identified time and pay-rate errors were corrected before payroll day. That measures what share of the errors the system found were fixed. An error the system never identified never enters the count, and no sample, period or definition was given.
Paychex added a second agent product on results day, 23 September. WISE Hire runs sourcing, screening and scheduling, finds candidates through Google for Jobs, Meta and ChatGPT, and is sold with Paychex payroll or without it. It claims hiring four times faster on average. The figure carries no baseline.
Anthropic published the scale of its own small-business package on 15 September: more than 900,000 installs, with Gusto and Xero among 27 new integrations. Gusto's connector can now stage a payroll run from a conversation for the owner to approve. The control is a click. It decides whether a change happens, not whether it is right.
Every agent write surface on record is scoped by what it may touch or by who approves it. None is scoped by amount. A small overtime correction and a four-figure bonus pass the same gate at every vendor that publishes its model. Payroll always knows the amount before the action, which makes a value threshold the cheapest control, and none on record has one.

Four UK obligations moved in five days, through three different channels, and a vendor's statement on the April 2027 benefits mandate split its readiness by benefit type.
On 22 September the government confirmed bereavement leave from April 2027 for close family, and up to two weeks of leave after pregnancy loss before 24 weeks, explicitly unpaid. Both follow a consultation response and arrive through secondary legislation during 2027. For payroll and HR products they are two new absence categories.
The rest moved through guidance. On 21 September HMRC added a reporting instruction for pension payers to its employer guide CWG2: tax code 0T, week-one basis, report on the FPS, no P45. On 23 September it added a fuel-type field to the April 2027 benefits submission annex, which is still titled "likely to be required".
On 24 September SAP told UK customers how ready it is for mandatory payrolling of benefits. For cars and vans its existing voluntary payrolling code is the foundation, narrowed to two supported configurations. For private medical, "more significant development is needed," and customers should "hold off on system changes" until guidance settles.
Cars and vans could already be payrolled voluntarily, so vendors supporting that have a path to extend. Private medical has no such history in most products. The April 2027 build is two extensions and one new capability, and readiness will split along that line rather than between vendors. The guidance that settles private medical is expected after the Budget on 28 October.
The profession added its own evidence. The CIPP's response to the holiday-pay enforcement consultation, published 24 September, named "payroll software limitations" among the causes of error and asked for a two-year claim window rather than six. The window is a product specification: six years back is a recalculation capability, two is a retention setting.

One large payroll seller grew on price and published no worker count. One European processor stopped reporting. One small vendor priced its hardest jurisdiction at zero.
Paychex reported on 23 September. Management Solutions, its core payroll and HR software, grew 4%, "driven by higher revenue per client resulting from price realization and product penetration." The employer-of-record business grew 12% on more worksite employees. Guidance rose only there. The shares fell almost 9% that day.
No absolute worker count appeared in the release or on the call. The only volume figure was a ratio, one in eleven US private-sector workers. That follows Intuit's investor day the week before, which retired its payroll revenue line and held workers paid at 18 million. Volume is the figure that would show whether the unit still grows.
On 21 September Zalaris said it will not publish third-quarter results at all, seven weeks before its shares stop trading. Its buyer holds 87.70%, short of the 90% needed to force out the minority, and had filed no result-of-offer notice by Friday. One of few audited views into European multi-country payroll closes early.
At the other end of the market, Wagepoint folded Québec payroll into its base product on 22 September at no extra cost, covering Revenu Québec remittances, QPP, QPIP and RL-1. Jurisdictional depth has usually been sold as a tier. Here it is included to win the base deal, the opposite of price realization.
Germany set its own price input on 21 September. The draft 2027 social-insurance thresholds rest on wage growth of 4.38% in 2025, a table every payroll engine in the country implements each year.

In September banks put payroll inside the account. This week Workday went the other way, putting the account inside the HR record.
On 24 September Workday launched Total Benefits in the US. Employees can open or connect an account at OnePay, EarnIn, PayPal, Cash App or Chime to receive their pay, draw wages early through DailyPay, and verify income through Equifax, with Experian and Checkr due in late October.
A self-service agent will enrol coverage, add dependants and update beneficiaries, with general availability expected in October. Benefits administration is delivered by partners including Strada. It is the second operation in eight days that Workday's own channel sells and a partner runs, after OneSource Virtual's managed payroll on 17 September.
American Express put Gusto's payroll inside Business Checking on 15 September and Mercury put a ledger inside its account a day later. Workday now routes the paycheck to the account from the HR record. Whoever owns the moment gross-to-net becomes money holds the deposit, the float and the verification data. The calculation starts to look like the least valuable part.
Two neighbouring moves marked the edges of the suites. Dayforce announced FedRAMP Initial Implementation on 21 September, which the FedRAMP register still lists as not yet certified. And Quinyx, a pure-play scheduling vendor that does not run payroll, disclosed that it is one of seven Leaders in Gartner's first workforce management quadrant.
